Derby Name: FREEK-A-RELLA
Team: Greenbelt Riot, Sisters of Anarchy, formerly Gold Coast Derby Grrls 2008-2015
Where do you work?
Metz Culinary at Niagara University, NY
How does your job affect your derby career?
I think derby has helped my career as a Chef. You have to be a team player, make adjustments and just make it happen. I like a challenge and my job and derby give me both.
What are your hobbies outside of derby?
I love to bake. I’ve recently purchased some new supplies so Ill be baking my face off! And shopping online. That’s a hobby, right?
How do your outside hobbies/skills affect your derby career?
I have to skate more when I bake. I love to eat my creations. I skate to support my eating habit. So it’s a win win. Skate and cake!
What is the story behind your derby name?
In my pre-derby life, my friends always called me freak or spazz cause I’m a little weird and clumsy. I also love disney princesses and tiaras and sparkly things. I didn’t want to be called spazz forever so Freek-A-Rella was born. Most people call me Freek. It’s not just a name, it’s a lifestyle.
Why roller derby?
I’ve been a rink rat my whole life. Roller skating, ice skating, hockey, inlines. I watched derby as a kid and dreamt I would do it some day. Derby came to South Florida and I was hooked. Its everything I want. Skating and full contact.
What would you be doing right now if you weren’t involved with derby?
I have no clue. Ive been doing this for a long time. Its consumed so much of my life. Im sure I would still be playing sports. Gotta stay busy.
What’s your favourite part of the derby experience?
Full contact! I do love the hits but its being part of a team that is the best. It’s working together for the common goal. Watching our training grow, seeing strategies come together, and Fresh Meat. New derby girls make me happy. Its fun to see skaters evolve. And gives me new people to hit. Did I mention I like to hit people?!
What position do you play?
Blocker. I’m allergic to jamming.
How do you hone your derby skills?
I always try and think about my technique and keeping it consistent. I pick small goals or drills to work on and make it my side focus till I get them right. I also watch lots of derby footage online. I learn so much about strategies and penalties. I’m also married to an official so he teaches me cool stuff.
What’s your favourite pre-game meal or snack?
I eat Subway before games. I think they should sponsor me at this point.
Who is your Biggest Fan(s)?
My husband, 90° Johnson. He is also involved with derby and loves it as much as I do. He is an official but has also been my bench coach recently. Its way better having him on my side of the track.
And my kiddos, lil freek 30 and lil freek 24. They have been my fans from the beginning. “This is my mom, Freek. She plays roller derby.” That’s how they introduce me.
Who is your hero?
My kids. They amaze me every day. I made 2 awesome humans.
And the person who made my new 1500 thread count Egyptian cotton bed sheets.
Most memorable derby moment?
There are too many to choose from. My favorite moments usually happened off the track. Travels with my team, afterparty shenanigans, locker room dancing. The best times of my life.
Music, coffee, dancing, makeup, red matte lipstick and sooo much glitter.
What is your athletic background?
I have always played sports. Softball, skating, soccer, hockey. Anything fun. Staying active is important to me.
Advice to someone interested in playing?
Just do it. Go out and meet your local team. There is a place is derby for everyone at every level. Skaters, officials, volunteers and super fans. Go be a part of it. It will change your life.
Who do you want to give a SHOUT OUT to?
Shout out to my GRRLS! My heart will always bleed gold!
Likes: glitter, shoes, girlie things and cursing. Dislikes: mushrooms and ferrets. Ew!
I’m currently derby single. I’m a bit of a playa! But I’m willing to consider applications.
