June’s skater of the month is an OG Dalhousie Destroyer, current Sister of Anarchy and the longest running member of our Board of Directors.  That means she does so much behind the scene work, it’d make your head spin. We love you and appreciate all the work you do to keep us running smoothly. Big derby love to Rammin Ramona!

Derby Name: Rammin’ Ramona
Number: 9
Team: Sisters of Anarchy

Where do you work?
Kemira Chemicals

How does your job affect your derby career?
I’m the manager for health and safety, the environment, and quality. So I guess I’m always anticipating bad things happening and then trying to figure out ways to prevent it…which is why, being on the board of directors, I drive everyone crazy asking about details. Oh and sometimes I’m kinda bossy I 😛

What is your derby name? What’s the story behind it?
I always liked the name Ramona, it’s been the tough smart cool girl in a couple of movies like Roadkill and Scott Pilgrim. So it was going to be “Ramona Pain” (haha) but it was too close to another name in twoevils so I picked something that sounded old school instead.

Why roller derby?
I used to skate as a teenager and loved it. I saw the ad in the Haig Bowl at my son’s hockey practice and thought I’d give it a try, and have loved it ever since.

What would you be doing right now if you weren’t involved with derby?
Acting in amateur theater, or trying to learn to play the guitar and drums better…they are covered in inches of dust L I guess I should probably add clean my house to that list :S

What’s your favorite part of the derby experience?
The great mix of personalities and characters that have come together, with such a wide spread in age and background. And I really just love to skate.

What position do you play?
I used to jam in the first couple of seasons but I mostly just block now.

What’s your favourite pre-practice meal or snack?
All-you-can-eat sushi with my son.

Who is your Biggest Fan(s)?
My boyfriend Greg.

Who is your Hero?
My 15 year old son plays football and whenever I feel too tired or hot or maybe a little scared, I think of how he puts himself out there, smashing into all these kids much bigger than him, and feel inspired.

Most Memorable Derby Moment?
Our first bout at Jack Gatecliff was unbelievable….1200 spectators, the mayor was there, it was ccrraazzzzy. We had no idea there would be that kind of turnout. I helped organize bout day without really knowing what I was doing because it was our first, and afterwards I felt exhausted but so proud of all of us. What a great night!

Pre-Bout Rituals?
It’s not really a ritual but my number 9 has to be written with a “curly 9” on my arms….like on Sesame Street…this drives my team mates a bit nuts I think, when I ask them to write my # for me

What’s your Athletic Background?
Karate in the past, yoga in recent years.

Who do you want to give a SHOUT-OUT to?
Special shout out to my fellow Board members who make the many many emails, messages, and hours of meetings time somehow fun…lots of laughs and support from this group of hardworking, smart, amazing women.

Derby Wife?
It will always be the elusive Mizz Mowdown <3 I miss her
